One of my favorite tips for content creators is to plan and prepare content as far in advance as possible. I also suggest they batch create. This helps reduce the stress of trying to figure out what to post last minute and ensures the quality of content.
Now when I’m talking about quality I don’t mean how crisp the photos are or that the aesthetic goes with your feed. What are Hashtags?
Hashtags are a label for content prefaced by a hash # symbol. This label helps algorithms identify and categorize your content so it can be found. When people use social media platforms like Instagram, they may search for something like “summer bbq outfits”. If you’ve got #summerbbqoutfits as one of your hashtags your content may likely pop up and discovered. If you don’t your content will sit there on your page and collect dust never to be discovered by anyone other than people who are already following you.
Should I use Hashtags?
Absolutely, you aren’t creating content for yourself are you? You want your reach to go as far as it can and hashtags are one of the simplest ways to accomplish that. You can use hashtags on your Instagram stories, reels, and static posts.
Hashtags are an excellent way to get new eyes on your content and possibly new followers. If you’re looking to follow like minded people hashtags are a great way to find them. Plus, if you need a little inspiration for your next great post searching hashtags is an amazing way to discover content from others to help create your own.
How Do I Choose Hashtags?
There are a few ways you can pick your hashtags but I always like to start with the content. Take a look at what you’re posting and write out a few keywords relevant to the post. If you’re sharing a trendy affordable outfit for fall consider the hashtag #affordablefallfashion. Doing some light research on Instagram I can see that there are 738 posts under this hashtag. I’ll get into why this is relevant in choosing hashtags a little later in the post so keep that in mind.
You can also search Instagram accounts that are similar to yours to see what hashtags they are using.
There are also services online that can help you identify popular and trending hashtags.
However, my biggest suggestion when choosing a hashtag is to make sure it’ relevant and I can not stress that enough. Most importantly your hashtags need to be relevant to your post. If you’re sharing a flat lay of your summer bbq outfit do not hashtag #christmasiscoming or anything else completely unrelated. You can use location-based hashtags, product and service based hashtags and even create your own specific branded hashtags. There’s a whole world out of hashtags for you!
How Do I Know Which Hashtags Will Perform Best? What Are The Best Instagram Hashtags for Autumn/Fall?
You won’t but, it’s always a good idea to mix them up and pay attention to your analytics. That’s why it’s important to have either a creator or business account. You’ll easily be able to track which posts perform better, who your posts are reaching and when. This will help you better tailor the hashtags you choose to use by your posts performance.
Should I Only Use Popular Hashtags?
Remember earlier when I said #affordablefallfashion had 738 posts? Well, that’s definitely not a popular hashtag judging by how often it’s been used. Does it mean it’s a bad hashtag? No. Which goes to answer the question “Should I only use popular hashtags?”? The answer is NO. Using a variety of hashtags is the best practice.
Using hashtags with lower numbers can help your content be seen easier than hashtags with millions of posts. If you’re only using hashtags with a million posts you may be drowned out. It’s important to mix it up between hashtags with lots of posts and fewer posts.
Hashtags with fewer than 500k posts are a good range. These are popular but not overused. If you have a smaller account or are just growing, try to stick around that number or lower for most of your hashtags when possible.
