Creating a morning routine was the best decision I could have made for myself, especially as a stay at home mom. Bringing home baby number 3 really changed the way that I operated. I spent most of my days rolling with the punches. As as result, I took a lot of punches and began to feel unproductive and overwhelmed. I knew if I wanted to keep my sanity and get things done, something needed to change.
The first change I knew I needed was more time. Which meant waking up early. I realized the more time I slept, the less time I had for myself. Gone were the days of snagging extra sleep to make up for the middle of the night feedings.
Waking up early gave me much needed quiet and alone time; which we all know as a parent is rare. I used this opportunity to get back to myself. The person I am outside of motherhood or being a wife. It did wonders for how I managed and felt through my day.
There isn’t anything spectacular about my morning routine, except the results. And to be honest, the things I started to do and change were so simple. These are things anyone can implement into their day so, if you want to change your life a little keep reading.

Pray
Before I decided to take control of my morning one of the first things I did was grab my phone. I would lay in bed surfing social media and subjecting myself to wild mix of emotions before my feet hit the floor. I’d see a post that made me happy, one that irritated me, a news alert that made me angry or an update that made me sad. There was nothing intentional about it and because I started my day with those feelings they lingered.
Once I decided to be intentional, I quit letting my phone be my first priority. Instead, I started my day with a prayer and decided to always start my day feeling grateful.
Plan and Set Goals
The things I need to do each day are usually thought of the night before but, every morning I make a plan to tackle my goals. I usually figure out what’s most important or will take the most time.
Planning things helps me to feel productive. Meeting my goals gives me a sense of accomplishment to know that I got something done. And it doesn’t matter if it’s finally washing a load of clothes or calling my grandma for a chat. Having a plan for my day makes me feel good.
Workout
I will not sit here and lie and say that I work out everyday. The truth is, I just started trying to implement it into my day and damn it feels good. I spent years robbing myself of an exercise routine. Instead of actually working out, I would wish I ‘could’ workout. I felt like I needed a gym membership or weights at home. Even clothes were an excuse because I didn’t have the cute workout gear I’d see on Instagram. I had a pile of excuses and the extra weight to prove it.
Now that I have a morning routine, working out has to be part of that. Why? Simple, I want to lose weight and look good because I know it will make me feel good. And that’s the whole point of creating my morning routine, feeling good, feeling productive and bettering myself.
Shower and Get Dressed
Showering was definitely more of a “get in where you fit in” type of thing. I have three daughters, so I was making sure they all had showers or baths, combed hair and had clean clothes before I worried about myself. Plus, with an infant it isn’t easy to say “Hey, I know you’re wide awake and probably need me but, I think I’ll shower instead of tend to you“. And it’s even harder to say “Hey, I know you’re sleep and if I’m showering I won’t hear you wake up and cry but, I’m going to do it anyways even though I don’t really need to shower since it’s already noon and we aren’t going anywhere.“. The thing is, people need to shower.
Not only do you need to shower, but you should also enjoy your shower. Let go of the guilt that your baby doesn’t get to stare you in the face for a few minutes.
Once I started building a morning routine, a shower became a necessity not something I did when I could. Not only did I make sure I made the time for one, I made use I used products that made me feel good. Then of course I get dressed because if anything makes me feel like a normal person, it’s putting on clothes.
Journal – One of my favorite morning routine tips for stay at home moms

I love to write things down. I don’t know what it is about writing but, it’s one of the best things around. Each morning I make time to sit and write in my journal. I used to be pretty uptight about it. Making sure that I only used one specific journal and wrote in one specific way (diary style) with one specific pen but, that was stressful and not in line with my goal of having a good morning.
Now, I write whatever I want to, with whatever I want to about what I want and how. I enjoy writing diary style but, not a lot changes in my daily life so, I mostly write intentions or larger goals. Sometimes I write poems to reflect the way I feel about something that I can’t express otherwise. A lot of the times I tell myself how awesome I am and other things I need to hear but don’t.
If you found my journal in the street you might think I was narcissistic with all the “You’re so awesome. You can do anything. You’re so blessed. Wow, you look good today. You’re so loved. Your kids are so lucky to have you. You’re so smart.” and more scribbled in it. The thing is, I don’t care there’s nothing wrong with loving yourself and giving yourself a little reassurance and boost.
Keeping a journal helps me get into the best mental space for the day. I get to write things that make me feel good and also write things that might make me feel upset to get them off and out of my mind.
Well, there it is. That’s my morning routine to help me feel like a happy, healthy, productive stay at home mom.
