Tiktok will let you know everything you need to know, especially about current trends like Vlogtober. While I’m not unfamiliar with the phrase Vlogtober, I haven’t heard it in a while and I hadn’t given any thought to the idea that I should participate. What is Vlogtober anyway? Well, at it’s easiest definition – a social media challenge.

What is Vlogtober?

Vlogtober is where content creators spend the month of October posting daily vlogs! That’s right, every single day you are challenged to create a new video – 31 days straight. The goal for most participating is to build their channels, grow a community, learn editing skills. For me, it’s all of that and also to get comfortable in front of the camera (and getting the camera out in public places).

I hadn’t thought that I would participate in Vlogtober but I spent all of October 1st vlogging an average day in life. There was literally nothing extraordinary about my day. I got coffee during my kids morning drop off routine, went shopping for my sisters funeral, made a peach crumble. All simple stuff but, looking back at my vlog it seemed like a fulfilling day. Maybe my life isn’t as boring and dull as I thought.

What made me want to participate in Vlogtober was a deep need for human connection after my sister passed. I spend a lot of time to myself and this grief was been tremendously heavy. Vlogging felt like it could be a way I wouldn’t feel so alone in a difficult time. Plus, it seemed like it would be a neat way to keep my mind off my current circumstance.

What kind of videos to make for Vlogtober?

You might be wondering what kind of videos to make for Vlogtober? I know it seems pretty straight forward -any kind but, everybody is doing it in different ways. For me, I’m creating short form content on Tiktok and moving it all over to Youtube as a long form video. You can watch the first one I created below.

It’s basically a day in life. However some people are focused on specific things that are within their niche. Lucky for me I don’t quite have a niche on social media so I don’t feel a lot of pressure on what kind of videos I create. The other bright side is that apparently it’s also baketober and since I do bake a little here and there it was a great fit into my content.

Why are people doing the Vlogtober Challenge?

As I mentioned earlier there’s plenty of different reasons people are choosing to participate. Trying out these kinds of challenges are a great way to learn or jump into content creation if you’ve been thinking about it. Emotional distress aside, for me I was excited to challenge myself to 31 days of something. To lock in a really commit. How hard is it to have a camera out? But, what I especially look forward to is revving up my creative juices editing videos.

One challenge I’ve come across is that fact that I record short form videos which is a different aspect ratio than long form Youtube videos. So I had to find a way to transfer my Tiktoks to Youtube and if you watched my Day 1 Vlog you’ll notice I just put a fun and sparkly background on the video. Plus, I used fun and engaging texts. Can you imagine the difference between that kind of effort and me just putting up a narrow snippet of video against a black background? – BORING!

Getting comfortable with a camera

Sheesh, now that I am talking about it I’m starting to realize there are all kinds of reasons I decided to try Vlogtober. Another one being, getting comfortable with a camera. I spent almost $1000 on a camera few years ago and it collects DUST. Doing Vlogtober is a way I’m hoping to challenge myself to use it more (even if everything is easier with a phone). Plus, Vlogtober is a way I’m hoping I’ll force myself to get more comfortable with pulling out a camera and public.

Honestly, I used to be very shy about it and still am but, I noticed people don’t care. Most people anyway. If you do get a look or two it’s likely curiosity. The truth is one those people past you they won’t think of you or what you’re doing again. Hell, they might just be worried about themselves “how do I look? Am I in the frame? Let me hurry and move”, their thoughts are really truly hardly ever about you.
