I’ve been inspired!
Recently, I read “The Most Wonderful Crime of The Year” by Ally Carter. It’s a Christmas mystery romance (which is totally out of my reading norm – The romance part anyway) and incredibly engaging. I wrote a full review here which you can enjoy. For now, I want to talk about how I’ve been inspired by this cutesy little winter romance.
Growing up, I wanted to be a New York Times Best Selling author. My dreams were filled with me hawking out books with incredible twists and a huge audience dying to flip through the pages. I could see my name everywhere, on my books, In magazines, during news segments and more. Then somewhere along the lines that big dream turned to a small desire slowly flickering out through the years of my life.
I never did do what it took to be an author, let alone a New York Times Best Selling author. I didn’t write poems, book reviews, letters to my incarcerated friends and family and short little stories for fun anymore. I created meal plans and budgets and filled out long exhausting packets of paperwork 24/7. Hell, I didn’t even read half as much as I used to.
You could say I gave up on my dream but, I like to say I forgot about it. That was until I decided it was alright to blog and maybe that could turn into something one on. No, it wouldn’t make me a New York Times Best Selling Author but it could get my writing juices flowing again. So, I started a blog -and I tried to follow all the rules of blogging but failed. Miserably.
Just take a look around, this blog has seen better and worse days and there’s been a lot of inconsistency.
You’re probably wondering by now what’s that got to do with anything weren’t we talking about inspiration?
Yes.
Let me finish.
“The Most Wonderful Crime of the Year” has a character that is a world renowned best selling author, obviously a New York Times Best Selling author. She has 99 books under her belt and had been writing her 100th. There’s a point in the book where she says (and this is not verbatim) “I’m going to bed but, first I’m going to write 500 words like I do every night.” And in that I found inspiration.
You see, this character was 500 words a night for the love of the game. Sure, it probably helped her with the 99 books and all of that but, still 500 words was likely her way of making sure she always did something she loved. And growing up I loved writing but, I lost the love along the way when I forgot about the dream.
I’ll be honest, I do still dream of one day being a best selling author. But, for now I just want to go bad to that childlike love for writing and I’ve been inspired to do that by simply writing 500 words a day. That’s it. And lucky me, I have a blog to do it on and no one telling me what those words have to be about.
So, look forward to a lot more coming and none of it being niche. It’s just me doing what I love because one of my favorite hobbies (reading) inspired me to be me again.
