Recently divorced and not quite first when it comes to her publishing house, author Maggie Wyatt finds herself alone for the holidays. Just when she thinks she’ll be spending Christmas alone with her thoughts she’s invited overseas to a Christmas holiday by her biggest fan. Her arch nemesis -I mean co-worker – I mean better selling author than Maggie, Ethan Chase has also received this mysterious invitation and off they go together to spend Christmas in England with an unknown host. We find out, that the host is actually best-selling author Eleanor Ashley. The worlds number one mystery writer and Maggies life long favorite author.
But, this story is a mystery after all not just a romance and when Eleanor Ashley disappears from a locked room we’re quickly thrown into a franctic race to figure out what happened while trying not to fall in love.

Let me let you onto a little secret… romance is not my favorite genre. I avoid romance books like the plague. That’s because I’m not very big on spice in my books and durrr romance books probably have a little spice, right?
But, I choose this book anyways because I am a mystery and thriller fan and read somewhere there wasn’t really spice in this book. And as it turns out, the level of spice truly was super low -just how I like it and the mystery was super good.
What I liked about this book
I liked that this book wasn’t too much of one thing. We have mystery, a love story, and Christmas vibes all wrapped into one. Just as much as I wanted to know who dunnit, I swooned at the thought that Marcie (and you’ll get that later) was slowly opening her heart and finding love. I also enjoyed the inner monologue of the main characters.
Ally Carter does a really good job of making this book feel just as serious as she does whismical. She was able to keep me interested and most importantly guessing. It wouldn’t be a reach to say that I would read something else by her.
What I didn’t like about this book
What I didn’t like about this book was that even though our main characters were likeable, had development and growth we got their back stories and got to understand them. For the supporting characters they simply were just who they were.
For example, the nephew was absolutely pretentious. You’d have thought he wrote 99 novels. But, we don’t quite get to understand where his sense of entitlement comes from? Where are his parents, what was his relationship with Eleanor Ashley really like? Is he just assuming he’s in the will? Why is he so adamant that he’s next in line. For all we know Eleanor Ashley could have decided to leave everything to charity. I wanted to know more about the nephew. It was just too obvious what he was trying to do throughout the book.
Would I recommend this book? If so, to who?
Would I recommend “The Most Wonderful Crime of The Year”?
The Most Wonderful Crime of The Year is absolutely a book I would recommend to persons of all ages. Especially those who loves a good mix of mystery and romance. It’s a wonderful read for a Christmas vacation on the slopes or nestled up with your pet by a fire. I think people of any age can enjoy this because it’s not too sexual of a romance book, and you’ll be guessing VERY WRONG might I add about the mystery and likely won’t see the plot twist until it’s exposed.

While we’re on the topics of apps, I also want to share two of my favorite apps to use for reading and they are Libby and Hoopla.
Both of these apps will require you to have a library card but, they’re amazing for avid readers on a budget. Or people who want to support their local library -both of which are me. If you’re wanting to test new genres, read the latest and most viral books, or simply just don’t want the clutter of books around your house I recommend either one of these apps. You can also borrow audio books which I think is a great feature for people who don’t have the time to read but love to listen! I hope you check them out
