Horror isn’t always blood, guts and a sneaking suspicion that something’s in the shadows. Horror can also be cleaning up your baby sisters blood from her apartment floor after she was found dead. Horror can elicit feelings of dread, shock, and disturbing images burned into your dead. I experienced that but, more than that I experienced the truest form of horror I’ve ever know – PEOPLE’S GREED.
My sister was found dead in her apartment by my uncle. I was the first person he called and the second to arrive at the scene. My uncle met me there and quickly claimed dibs on my sisters fully paid off car. In the moment and even know I didn’t really care. Screw the car, can I just have my sister please? Throughout the entire process of cleaning up her apartment, packing up he belongings, organizing her paperwork and paying for the funeral my uncle tagged along.
He watched me as I broke down not being able to afford a viewing if the funeral home thought she would be presentable. He listened as I shared my struggles with how expensive this situation was to take care of on my own. The gas to drive almost 3 hours each way to all the different appointments and meeting necessary people. I expressed how I would even be late on my rent but it was okay because I knew I would have the money eventually to pay for it even though my husband was laid off from his job the day my sister died.
Due to the circumstances of my sisters death her phone was taken into police custody. My uncle constantly made attempts to retrieve it but, he’s not the next of kin. Only I would be able to retrieve it and he was always volunteering to pick it up once it was ready for release. He claimed it was to save me gas. I didn’t think anything of it.
Throughout the process of planning my sisters funeral, he volunteered to take over the repass and food arrangements. Then he said, he wanted to make it potluck style and to ask people to bring a dish. I was annoyed, if he didn’t offer to take over that responsibility I would have included it in my budget. Regardless, I still in my moment of mourning never gave any of his behavior a second thought.
That was until my sisters phone was ready for pickup. I didn’t tell him because he suspiciously called me asking for her social security number. When I got the phone I went through everything. I was desperately searching for the answer as to when my sister died. We knew she had been down for at least a day but, I wanted specifics. Through my search I discovered someone was using her debit card.
Whoever used it was making purchases for gas, games on their phone, auto parts, and cable bills.
I asked my uncle if he knew anything about it and he admitted to me that he did. $1300 dollars gone for selfish gain. Not a single dollar contributed to laying my sister to rest. Disgusting behavior. Like a vulture he swept in and started taking whatever he could from my sisters life.
He gained financially, he gained a car, and he contributed nothing but lies as he watched me mourn, struggle and stress. THAT IS TRUE HORROR. His casualty about it turns my stomach in ways I can only express as sickening.
Now I’m left to press charges, take back my sisters property and not feel like I’m the bad guy.
Grief makes people do funny things but, I would have never suspected it would make a person do that.
Thanks for listening.
