Journaling is one of my favorite ways to relieve stress. Not just the stress of parenthood and being a mom to three but also the general stress life brings. If you don’t know, I’ve had a very rough time since 2022. I lost my brother to a seizure that led to brain death, my oldest nephew was murdered, my uncle died from cancer and my families matriarch at the great age of 94 passed away too. Plus, throughout all this I’ve been homeless, dealing with the aftermath of an affair, and overall truly feeling like I’m in a transformative period of time in life.  Yes, it’s a lot. No, I’m not okay. But, let’s stay on track because I can go on and on.

How Does Journaling Help with Stress

Journaling acts as an emotional release which helps us to relieve stress. Have you ever thought about how much lighter you felt after venting to a close friend? You feel good, you feel relieved even if it’s just for a moment. Journaling is almost exactly like that. The only difference is your writing instead of talking and since no one will be reading your journal you can truly get everything off your chest. You don’t have to worry about offending anyone or leaving out things you don’t trust others to know. Journaling allows you to be completely unfiltered.

The Basics of Journaling:

Journaling looks different for everyone but, basically it’s a form of writing that helps get your words, thoughts, feelings and etc. onto paper. For some it’s writing cohesive sentences into a notebook or journal each day. I like to think that’s what I do but in reality my entries are hardly ever daily or cohesive. But, that’s okay because journaling is a form of self-expression and anything you can manage to get on that paper counts. But, because journaling looks different for everyone I want to share a little bit about some popular different types or styles of journaling

What Type of Journal is Right For You:

Reflective journaling: The basic form of journaling where you create daily entries talking about your day and you’re feeling throughout it. I love this style of journaling when it comes to release and reflection. Sometimes I will open up an old journal read random entries. It’s amazing to step back in time and remember something I may have been going through or feeling that is IRRELEVANT today. It helps me remember that “all things shall pass” and to keep on keeping on.

Dream journaling: This is super simple. You can keep track of your dreams here or your future goals and aspiration. I tend to incorporate my dream journaling with my reflective journaling. But I want to make it a habit to remember my dreams more often so I may buy a journal just for this purpose.

Gratitude journaling: As you might expect this is basically a form of journaling where you share your gratitude and grace. You write out what’s happening that you’re thankful for and it’s really a beautiful and simple way to open your eyes to the positive side of your life. In my experience having gratitude even for the little things greatly improves my perception of life. Try it.

Bullet journaling: If you’re looking to be more organized bullet journaling is perfect for you. Since you’re in charge of the design you can create spaces for quick notes/journal entries. But mostly with bullet journals you will keep track of your schedule, to-do list, goals appointments. They are so many great youtubers with amazing looking bullet journals. This is definitely one you have to put your heart in.

Art journaling: Perfect if you want to add color and even more personal flare. Art journals usually incorporate drawings and other visual aspects for you to enjoy and express yourself.
